Fire danger rating rises to ‘High’ in RDCO parks as dry conditions persist

May 7, 2026 | 10:09 AM

The Regional District of Central Okanagan is urging caution in its parks as dry conditions and rising temperatures push wildfire risk higher across the region.

The fire danger rating in regional and community parks has been raised to ‘High’, or level 4, prompting reminders for visitors to follow all fire prevention rules while using park spaces this spring and summer.

Smoking, vaping and open flames are not permitted at any time in RDCO regional or community parks. Propane-fueled barbecues are allowed, but must be actively attended and kept well away from any flammable materials.

While fines for violations under regional parks and community parks bylaws range from $250 to $1,000, officials say the greater concern is the potential for a wildfire that could threaten parklands, infrastructure and nearby homes.
