Carter Work Week At Vernon Habitat House

The chairperson for Habitat for Humanity in the North Okanagan sends her thoughts to former U-S President Jimmy Carter today.

Carter was treated for dehydration while working on a Habitat house in Winnipeg this morning.

Glory Westwell says this is Carter Work Week,with Carter in Canada to help celebrate the country’s 150th birthday.

“We really want this to be a big thing for Canada with the 150 build for our birthday, also for him because he’s made the big effort to come to Canada and be part of our birthday.”

Vernon was chosen to be among the cities to be noted for building a total 150 homes across the country.

But there are no plans for Carter to come to Vernon.

Westwell says it’s a busy week at the site of Habitat’s triplex being built on 35th Avenue.

“We have several volunteers in site, probably about 30 in fact, for this week, every day. They’re building fences, putting up decks, sanding, staining”

Several companies have also volunteered services and supplies to get the work done.

“Everything else is in place. of course, all the electrical, plumbing, insulation. So now it’s just putting up the drywall. Once that is done we’ll be busy painting and putting in all the flooring and fixtures etcetera.”

Glory Westwell says Traine Construction from Kelowna has committed to helping with whatever is needed.

Other backers include Heartwood Homes which has been instrumental in getting other companies to donate.

Tim Hortons, Panago and Predator Ridge have all supplied food this week.

It’s hoped the Habitat triplex being built on 35th Avenue will be finished in September.
