Coldstream man clocked at nearly double the speed limit on Highway 97C

B.C. Highway Patrol is reminding people to drive to the speed limit after catching a Coldstream man going almost twice the highway speed.

Police said a 29-year-old man from Coldstream was clocked going 207 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on Highway 97C near Elkhart on April 1.

“That’s obviously a dangerous speed, and nowhere near the already-generous speed limit,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of B.C. Highway Patrol said.

“This traffic stop was made even more dangerous because the driver failed to pull over to the right.”

The driver pulled over to the left side of the divided highway, putting himself and the officers in the path of the fastest and potentially most dangerous vehicles. However, police said other motorists obeyed the flashing lights of the cruiser, slowing down and giving the vehicles plenty of space.

The driver’s black 2007 Dodge Challenger was impounded for seven days, and the man was fined $483 for excessive speeding, ordered to pay for the tow truck and impound, and will see his insurance escalate with high-risk driver premiums. Highway Patrol said the total cost of these penalties will be around $2,500.

“We’re glad that no one was hurt, because at these kinds of speeds, collisions lead to fatalities,” McLaughlin added.

“We would like to remind drivers to slow down. And if you do get stopped by police, remember to pull to the curb lane just like it says in the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.”
