Kelowna council to review plan aimed at safer streets

Jan 12, 2026 | 10:01 AM

Kelowna city council is set to review the Safe Mobility Action Plan today, a strategy designed to reduce serious injuries and deaths on city streets. The plan builds on initiatives like traffic calming, cycling networks, and partnerships with ICBC.

It includes 29 actions in four areas: safer intersections, protecting pedestrians and cyclists, managing speeds, and promoting safe driving with RCMP and ICBC support.

Between 2018 and 2022, 2,900 collisions on city roads caused 13 deaths and 119 serious injuries, with more than half involving pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists. Two-thirds of residents say they feel unsafe on city streets.

If approved, the plan will be implemented over the next decade through projects, programs, and ongoing monitoring to make Kelowna streets safer for everyone.
