City of Vernon making progress on OCP

The work required to update the major document outlining the future growth of Vernon has been moving along.

Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters that City Council was presented with the second draft of the Official Community Plan (OCP), Tuesday, Sept. 3.

“Council has been slowly stepping through this 279 page document, and that took up most of the day [including the Committee of the Whole meeting that went before the regular council meeting and reconvened again in the afternoon],” the Mayor said.

“[We were] making suggested improvements along the way, and we will return to that to continue this process over the next two weeks.”

Cumming said “significant community input has been built into this second draft,” and adding it will be released for the final round of public engagement once the second version has been completed “sometime in the fall.”

The OCP is a long term plan that sets out policies relating to housing, infrastructure and other factors required to help guide the city through future population growth.

The OCP has been in the making for several months, and Cumming said staff have done a good job drafting the plan and that “many, many community members participated in multiple opportunities for public input,” which have helped guide the priorities and the goals of the plan so far.
