Western Canada’s Original 48 Hour Film Project returns to Vernon

Aug 20, 2025 | 11:01 AM

Filmmakers will have a chance to flex their creative muscles with the return of a film project competition.

The 48 Hour Film Project will return to the Okanagan, where Western Canada’s orignal 48 Hour Film Competition started, for the third year.

Between September 5 and 7, filmmakers involved in the project will have just 48 hours to write, direct, shoot and edit a short film.

“This competition is for everyone — from seasoned pros to first-time filmmakers,” Harrison Coe, co-producer of the 48 Hour Film Project Okanagan, said.

“It’s fast, it’s creative, and it’s a blast.”

The filmmakers will attend a kickoff event at SilverStar Brewing in Vernon on Sept. 5 to randomly draw a genre for their piece, and be assigned a prop, character, and line of dialogue that must be included in their film.

“Every year we’re blown away by the creativity that comes out of this weekend,” Heath Fletcher, co-producer, added.

“It’s an intense, high-energy experience — and the more teams we have, the more electric it becomes. We’d love to see groups from across BC get involved and help make this our biggest year yet.”

The films will be screened and judged by a panel, with the winner going on to participate in a global competition of over 100 cities. The top choices from that competition will have a chance of being shown at a number of world-renown film festivals including at Filmapalooza and at the Canes Short Fil Corner.

Filmmakers can register for the 48 Hour Film Project online here.
