Heat Stroke Risk

Interior Health urges caution during heatwave

Jul 28, 2025 | 5:18 PM

A ridge of high pressure is expected to hit the Okanagan this week and drive the temperatures up, and Interior Health is urging people to be cautious of heat illness.

Environment Canada issued a Heat Warning Monday, July 28, saying the incoming system could bring daytime highs of 35 to 37 degrees between Tuesday and Thursday, along with overnight lows of 18 degrees.

Though not deemed a “heat emergency,” Interior Health does advise people take action to stay hydrated and cool during the hot spell.

“Everyone is at risk of heat-related illness, but hot temperatures can be especially dangerous for seniors; infants and young children; pregnant people; people with chronic health conditions and mental illnesses; people who work outdoors; and people who live alone or are socially isolated, homeless, or unsheltered,” Interior Health said in a media release.

To help beat the heat, IH advised people open windows at night but have them closed and the curtains drawn during the day; avoid using the oven; use fans or air conditioners to bring inside temperatures down; visit places that have air conditioning like malls, libraries, recreation centres and cooling centres; lower your activity level and avoid strenuous outdoor activities; and drink lots of water.

People are also asked to check on family members and neighbours who may be more vulnerable, and reminded to never leave children or pets in a parked car.

IH also noted that 911 should only be called in emergency situations such as for severe heat stroke, heart attack, strokes, head trauma, seizures, or other life-threatening health problems.

People can speak with a nurse by calling HealthLinkBC at 811 for all other health concerns, or they can visit a walk-in clinic or Primary Care Centre.

More information about heat illness can be found at the IH website.
