Kelowna RCMP warn cyclists as theft risks rise with spring riding season

Apr 14, 2026 | 3:00 PM

Cycling is ramping up again across the Okanagan as warmer weather follows one of the driest winters on record.

With more riders returning to the roads and trails, the Kelowna RCMP is reminding cyclists to take precautions against theft, warning that bikes are often targeted in public spaces during daylight hours. Police say thieves typically look for quick, easy opportunities, with parking lots, parks and streets among the most common locations for thefts.

Cyclists are being urged to use high-quality locks, secure bikes to fixed objects in well-lit, high-traffic areas, and register their bicycles through services such as Project 529 to improve the chances of recovery if stolen.

The City of Kelowna says its free bike valet service will also return in May to downtown Mill Street at the entrance to Bernard Avenue, offering secure parking for cyclists while they visit the area. Other options include the city’s Loan-a-Lock program at the Parkinson Recreation Centre and Bikeep smart racks installed at various locations, which provide secure parking and charging capabilities.
