May 19, 2025 | 6:00 AM

After a relatively strong start to the year, the housing sector reported a decline in April.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were eight housing project starts in Greater Vernon during the latest reporting month.

That was down from the 15 starts reported in March, and was also down from April of 2024 which saw 13 new home projects started.

Though down on a monthly basis, there had been 64 housing project starts in the first four months of 2025. That was up from the 35 projects started in the same period in 2024.

The homes started in April were all single detached homes, and were all located within the City of Vernon.

CMHC also stated that Kelowna saw 199 housing projects started in April, which was down when compared to the same month the year before.

There have been a total of 740 housing project starts in Kelowna so far this year, which is also down on an annual basis.

Additionally, CMHC reported 4,328 housing starts in B.C. and 21,720 in all of Canada in April.

B.C.’s figure was down when compared to the 4,467 starts in April of 2024, though Canada’s figure increased from the 18,539 starts in the same month the year prior.
