Bernard Avenue closes to vehicles as summer pedestrian zone returns to downtown Kelowna

A popular summer tradition is set to return to downtown Kelowna as parts of Bernard Avenue close to traffic and open to pedestrians.
Beginning Tuesday, May 13 at 6 a.m., the 200 and 300 blocks of Bernard Avenue – between Abbott and Pandosy streets – will be closed to vehicle traffic as part of the seasonal “Meet me on Bernard” initiative. The area will fully reopen to pedestrians and cyclists starting Friday afternoon, May 16, and will remain a car-free zone until Sept. 14.
The initiative, led by the City of Kelowna in partnership with local businesses and community groups, transforms the heart of downtown into a pedestrian-friendly corridor filled with expanded patios, pop-up events and public seating. Officials say the closure aims to foster vibrancy and connection in the city’s core during the summer months.
While Bernard Avenue is closed to motorists in the 200 and 300 blocks, neighbouring streets including Water Street and Pandosy Street will remain open to traffic. Drivers should note that Lawrence Avenue will permit only a left turn at its intersection with Abbott Street. On-street parking will be limited in the 400 and 500 blocks to make room for extended patios. To support access, temporary accessible stalls will be set up on nearby cross streets. Designated 15-minute pick-up and drop-off zones using the PayByPhone app will also be available along Abbott and Mill streets. Between 9 p.m. and midnight, these areas will transition to taxi zones.
