UPDATE: No injuries as experts assess landslide on Westside Rd

UPDATE:

The regional district says no injuries or damage has been reported after the landslide that shut down Westside Road North around 10 p.m.last night.

The closure is between Main Street and Denison Road. Traffic has to detour via Hwy 97 through Vernon and Kelowna.

The RDCO said the area of the slide was significantly impacted by the 2023 McDougall Creek Wildfire.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation and Transit said the slide was assessed at about 50-metres wide by 2-metres deep. Once the area is confirmed safe and crews begin clearing debris they’ll have a better idea on a timeline for repairs and reopening.

The ministry said geotechnical experts had done an initial assessment of the site, and further assessments were planned for early afternoon.

Westside Road is closed in both directions due to a landslide overnight south of Denison Rd.

The total stretch of the closure is reported by DriveBC as between Browse Road and Bear Creek Trail.

There is no estimated time of reopening with the latest DriveBC post saying the next update would be available at noon Thursday. Anyone stranded north of the closure needs to take a lengthy detour to Vernon and then down Highway 97 through Kelowna.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) said Wilson’s Landing Fire Department responded to the large mud/debris flow across Westside Rd, which was reported near 3523 Westside Rd.
