Helen Toma

It is with broken hearts the family of Helen Toma announces her passing on March 29, 2024 at the remarkable age of 102 years and 8 months. Born to Veronta (Veronica) and Todeor (Tom) Mihalcheon on July 18, 1921 Helen was the third eldest of nine children. Surrounded by a tight-knit Romanian community in northern Alberta she didn’t learn to speak English until she started school where her first English word was “shoe”.
Growing up on a prairie grain farm gave Helen the values she carried with her though out her lifetime: the importance of family, care for the environment, independence and determination. She had the ability to make do with what she had and to be thankful for it.
Helen came to Vernon in 1942 and except for a few short periods of time has lived here since then. She loved taking long walks in the country, cooking for family and friends, knitting, crocheting, and gardening “where roses were her specialty”. Helen never let age or circumstance define her: as demonstrated by her learning to drive in her 50’s and buying and paying for her little house on the East Hill.
Helen will best be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and her ability to accomplish things not encouraged for women of her era. She is survived by her daughter Linda Ingram, son-in-law James Ingram, granddaughter Krista Ingram (Edward Schratter), grandson Jordan Ingram and great grandson Roland Ingram. Sister Jeanne Kotke, many nieces and nephews, and good friend Margit Schratter. Helen was pre-deceased by her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Forever loved and missed. Mergi cu Dumnezeu (Go with God).
