City of Vernon staff have put a price tag on the repairs and ice installation costs for Kal Tire Place South during a lengthy shut down.

The 3,000-seat arena had to be closed, and the ice removed, after an ice chiller leak was detected March 9.

The chiller was repaired by March 13, and the ice surface was fully restored on the 20th.

A staff report to Vernon city council stated the repair and ice installation work cost around $17,700.

That total included approximately $11,00 for labour, including the ice removal and installation, around $4,000 for contractor costs, and another $2,700 for material and miscellaneous costs.

Recreation Services said it was able to accomodate over 90 per cent of the users who had intended to use the rink at Kal Tire Place South by instead having their events go at the North arena or the Priest Valley Arena.

However, the report said the lost rental revenue during the closure of Kal Tire Place South during that period was around $3,000.

It also noted there was lost revenues in concession commissions, and while that exact figure was not known, an estimate based on previous trends put it around $1,000.

All in, the unexpected closure of Kal Tire Place South costs the city approximately $22,000.
