UPDATE
March 14, 2024

RCMP say a medical issue is believed to have been the cause of a single-vehicle crash that shut down part of a busy Vernon road for several hours earlier this week.

Police, ambulance and Fire-Rescue all responded to Kalamalka Lake Road near Pottery Road on Tuesday (March 12) around 4 p.m.

“A pickup truck was travelling on Kal Lake Road when it veered off and collided with a hydro pole causing extensive damage to the pole and the lines to fall to the ground,” Const. Chris Terleski told Vernon Matters. “Due to the potential risk, emergency responders maintained a safe distance and closed the road to traffic until BC Hydro crews attended and rendered the scene safe.”

Terleski said the cause of the incident is believed to be medical in nature and the 67-year old driver was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The crash knocked out power to more than 2,300 customers in that area, and road traffic was detoured onto Highway 6 and other routes.

Police, fire, ambulance and BC Hydro crews were among the emergency personnel that responded to a crash on Kalamalka Lake Road in Vernon Tuesday afternoon.

Dispatch reports said a pickup truck hit a power pole near Pottery Road around 4 p.m., damaging the pole and bringing down a power line.

The driver was said to be trapped in the vehicle due to the downed line, but that has not been confirmed.

There is no word on the cause, or any injuries, but Vernon Matters has reached out to RCMP for details.

Vehicles were being detoured by RCMP near the turnoff to the Polson Mall by Highway 6.

The incident occurred right across from the BC Hydro station on Kal Lake Road, allowing for a quick response.

Hydro said about 2,300 of its customers lost power for several hours due to the incident.
