Winter Games Legacy Fund launched to support local organizations

Groups and organizations in Greater Vernon will be able to apply for some special grant funds.

The Greater Vernon 2022 B.C. Winter Games Society has opened applications for its Games Legacy Fund.

Through the fund, the society will be able to provide a total of $200,000 to support local projects in Greater Vernon.

A statement on the society’s website said the fund will go “beyond the world of sport to encompass the broader spectrum of the community.”

It also noted that at least 75 per cent of the total funding must go towards “provincially accredited, recognized and affiliated sport organizations.” The remaining 25 per cent can be used to support any project, whether or not they are sport related.

“The Legacy Fund is committed to investing in initiatives that contribute to the development and sustainability of sports, as well as building systems to assist athletes, coaches, and officials to meet their potential,” Nicky Dunlop, president of the the Greater Vernon 2022 B.C. Winter Games Society, stated.

“Additionally, a portion of the fund can be used to support other non-sport, community-focused projects, such as local arts, education, and cultural programs. The Legacy Fund seeks to create a lasting impact that enriches the entire community.”

In order to be eligible, the projects must take place in Greater Vernon, and all must include completed financial forms.

Applications will be accepted online until 11:59 p.m. March 10, 2024.

The games featuring roughly 1,300 young athletes from across the province, were initially intended to be held in Greater Vernon in 2022, but were delayed until 2023 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
