Helen was born on the family homestead in June 1930 at Pendryl, Alberta, to John and Evelina Engblom. The sixth of nine children, Helen had three brothers and five sisters. Helen’s mother died when Helen was eight. Helen grew up on the family farm and attended Maywood School. Helen took up playing her older brother’s accordion when she was twelve, an activity that turned into a lifelong passion. When she was ready for high school, Helen moved to Vancouver, where her father had a second home. After completing high school, she found work in Edmonton teaching accordion. In the early 1950’s, Helen and three of her sisters became Jehovah’s Witnesses. Helen later served as a special pioneer for several years, pioneering in Quebec, Alberta, and B.C.
Helen spent the early 1960’s in northern Alberta and BC, before moving to Quebec. While living in Dawson Creek, she met Clayton Cuthbert, whom she would come back from Quebec to marry in 1969. Helen & Clayton then lived for several years in Quebec, before moving to Vancouver to look after Helen’s father. Upon her father’s death in 1975, they moved to Breton, Alberta, where Helen lived for over thirty years. In 2008, Helen moved to Vernon to help her sister Ruth look after their sister Doris. After Doris died, Helen remained with Ruth until 2014, when Ruth moved to Carrington Place and Helen moved to Vernon Restholm.
Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Clayton in 1999. Helen was the last surviving member of her large family. She was predeceased by brothers Walter, Vern, & Ken Engblom and sisters Ruth McNeill, Doris Engblom, Mary Peterson, Ivy Seely, and Elsie Seely. She was also predeceased by five nephews and one niece. Helen is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces & nephews and great-great-nieces & nephews.
During her time in Vernon, Helen was cared for by her nephew Dan McNeill and his wife Pat. Helen will be fondly remembered by many friends at Vernon Restholm, especially her friend Evan, who misses her dearly. Helen will also be missed by the Okanagan and Breton congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vernon Restholm and the Interior Health nurses and care aides for helping Helen in her final years. A memorial service will be held at the Vernon Kingdom Hall on February 10, 2024 at 1:30
