Dust advisory issued for Vernon

A high concentration of coarse particulate matter in the air has led to a dust advisory being issued for Vernon.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, in collaboration with Interior Health, issued the advisory just before 10:40 a.m. on Friday.

The advisory will remain in place until there is precipitation, dust suppression, or a change in traffic patterns that results in less particulate matter being spread.

The advisory noted levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations.

The coarse particulate matter can be a concern for people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), heart disease, and diabetes. It can also be more harmful for people with respiratory infections such as COVID-19, pregnant women, infants, and the elderly.

People who are more at risk due to the dust are advised to postpone or reduce strenuous activities until the advisory is lifted.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and coughing or wheezing should speak with a health care professional.

The dust advisory will be lifted when conditions improve.
