Setsuko (Sets) Diana Mori passed away in her home early in the morning of October 3, 2023, just ahead of her 82nd birthday.
Mom is lovingly remembered and missed by daughters Lisa (Erik) and Sandra (Bernard). Grammy loved and was loved by her granddaughters Jane, Josie & Holly, and their various pets. Sets is remembered by Vernon brothers Richard (Judy), Terry (Janice), Edmonton sister Jeanne (Bill) and Chilliwack brother Hugh (Hiroko) as well as many nieces and nephews plus the next generation of cousins. She was neechan to many extended family. Predeceased by beloved brother Barrie and parents Yoshitaka and Mariye Mori.
Born in Mission, BC in 1941, Sets was a student at Vernon High School and went to UBC to become a registered nurse. We heard many stories about growing up on the family tomato-farm-then-apple-orchard on East Hill. Somewhere is a Saturday night photo by Foncie on Granville Street with her friends, looking chic and vibrant. Her nursing career started as community outreach and school nurse in Vancouver, and decades as Head Nurse of the Polson Children’s Extended Care at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
She filled her retirement with volunteer work: at the community police office, Vernon Art Gallery, the Vernon Performing Arts Center and extensively with the Red Cross. Sets logged many hours in the HELP office in Vernon and was deployed several times to disaster relief after fires or floods in BC and Alberta.
Vacations with family to Russia, Japan, and a Mediterranean and Australian cruise were treasured highlights. Weekend getaways to Las Vegas to shop, gamble and attend musical performances were always something to look forward to.
Interests pursued to various conclusions included scuba diving (certified), flight lessons (almost got her license), photography, and astronomy. Not to mention her love of arts: dabbling in ikebana, pottery, water colour painting, mixed media, glass fusing. Sets was a dedicated supporter of the arts community in the Okanagan.
She had a wry quiet sense of humour, was an avid reader and a talented knitter who cared a lot for her family. You could not enter or leave her house without being offered coffee/tea/pop, a sandwich or some ice cream, and a reminder to bundle up in your sweater.
Thank you Mom/Grammy for all the love.
Memorial to take place at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home November 10, 2023
