New plan for former golf course taking shape

Aug 25, 2023 | 5:00 AM

The dramatic resculpting of the former Royal York Golf Course in Armstrong continues with the course being re-aligned.

A putting course and outdoor wedding area are also part of what is now called the Overlander Golf and Events Centre.

Wesmont Homes is offering 139 rancher and two-storey homes with finished basements, ranging from 2,200 to 3,900 square feet, in what has been named the Rosemont.

Construction has started on some homes with the expected build-out to take several years.

The layout of the former course has been reshaped from a par 35 to a par 29 under the guidance of Todd York who remained with the new ownership group.

“Things have gone well, maybe not as fast as everyone would like to see or maybe faster that some would like. Well received by most [but] people who have played here for years don’t like change,” Director of Golf Operations Jesse Crowe told Vernon Matters.

The changes have opened up the course to a wider range of people from beginners to seasoned players.

“The new layout is outstanding. I have played it a ton, it is really fun, it is fun for golfers of all skill levels and you can hit lots of different clubs,” Crowe said.

The colder than normal April and hotter weather since has impacted the new course.

“It needs a little growing in, but it is getting there. Next year when we get the putting course online and open it to the public, I think this is going to be a great spot to spend the entire day playing golf and enjoying the wonderful food in the Overlander Restaurant,” Crowe added.

The putting course will be an all grass 11-hole course with some terrain changes, dog-leg and even par 5 putting holes.

The Overlander is also hosting events and weddings, and some changes have been made to facilitate that.

“They have done a great job with what used to be the first tee box, turned that into an area where you can have your wedding, your special event and of course the restaurant area is for rent along with a large patio, so there is lots of opportunity there,” Crowe said.
