A police investigation has been launched into the death of a paraglider.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to a report of a paragliding incident near Lumby.

An officer arrived at the scene in the 200-block of Mabel Lake Rd. where paramedics were providing medical attention to an unresponsive man in a field.

Despite first responder’s efforts the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The RCMP confirmed that the man was a 63-year-old from Vernon and an experienced hand-gliding pilot.

He had reportedly begun a paragliding flight Thursday morning but shortly after takeoff he suddenly and unexpectedly collided with the ground.

No criminality is suspected in the death.

The B.C. Coroners Service is also running an independent and concurrent investigation into this death.
