John passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on Sunday, March 26 surrounded by family. John was born in Nijverdal, Netherlands. His family immigrated to Canada in 1950 and settled in Red Deer, Alberta in 1952. He married Shany Datema on July 5, 1960 and after a short while, they moved to Vernon for work and to raise their family. They also cared for over 100 foster children. John worked in the meat industry, managing Vernon Meat and Lockers and then a co-owner at Ranchland Packers in Lavington. John had a passion for soccer, gardening, fishing and most of all, spending time with family. He was also an active member of the Vernon Christian Reformed Church. John was predeceased by his parents, two children and two siblings. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shany, children: John (Debbie), Ken (Terry), Kelly (Steve), Allen, Merissa (Jacob) and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life for John will be held on Saturday, April 29, at 2pm at the Easthill Community Church, 3605-12th Street, Vernon, B.C.The family would like to thank the staff at Polson Extended Care and Vernon Jubilee Hospital for the care they gave John.
