Back on top: Vernon team wins provincial curling championship

Some familiar names to local curling fans helped a Vernon team win a provincial championship.

Tyler Orme (skip) guided his squad with Trevor Perepolkin (third), Jamie Austin (second) and Rob Nobert (lead) to a 6-1 record — and the title — at the province’s club curling championship in Abbotsford on April 2.

The team will represent B.C. at the Canadian championships in Winnipeg in November.

“The Everest National Canadian Club Curling Championships started about 10 years ago as a competition for non-pro curlers, that don’t go on tour and play for money and the Brier etc,” Perepolkin told Vernon Matters. “It’s a great event to keep the grassroots curlers engaged as the sport continues to grow.”

It was Perepolkin’s first B.C. championship in 26 years. He was a phenom as a teenager, winning four B.C. Junior Men’s titles between 1993 and 1997 when he was known as TJ.

“I had [previously] lost B.C. finals three times, two in mens and once in mixed with my wife, Terri, who recently won the Vernon Ladies Club Championship. This now marks seven B.C. wins for me.”

Skip Tyler Orme was a teammate of Perepolkin’s for his provincial junior title in 1997.

“It was great fun to team up [with Orme] on another victory,” Perepolkin, a wealth advisor for National Bank Financial in Vernon, said.

The success was also sweet for bringing one-time rivals together.

“Rob Nobert was on a team that beat me in the B.C. Mens final one year to go to the Brier… fun to be on the same team now and get that water under the bridge,” Perepolkin remarked.

The second on the Vernon team, Jamie Austin, who is the president of the Funtastic Society, was the only member of the quartette that had never won a B.C. championship.

“He played great all week, but in particular in the Sunday semi-final and final, he was fantastic and very much earned it,” Perepolkin commented.

Kevin Geistlinger’s team was a previous B.C. club champion from Vernon.

It will undoubtably be cold, but the 2023 champs are looking forward to their trip to the nationals in Winnipeg this winter.

“Having six months to prepare, and the entire summer to look forward to this, is so much fun,” Perepolkin said.
