Wayne Kwok Wei Chung Sep 9, 1944 – Nov 10, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that the Chung family shares the passing of Wayne Chung, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, family member and friend. Wayne was born in Sun-Wei, where he grew up knowing the hardships of rural China. Seeking opportunity and adventure, Wayne immigrated to Canada in 1965 to join his extended family in Armstrong, BC, where he contributed to the family vegetable garden and restaurant. After many years of love letters to his sweetheart in Hong Kong, Wayne and Virginia married in 1973 and settled in Vernon, BC. As their family grew, Wayne worked for Tolko at the Lavington Sawmill until retirement in 2004. He befriended many with his easy laugh and jokester self. As an active member of the Vernon Chinese Freemasons, Wayne was a leader in community, often responsible for coordinating dinners and events that celebrated our Chinese roots.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife Virginia of 49 years. Together they raised 4 children Barry Chung, Gayle (Chris) Grout, Jerry (Amy) Chung and Gregory (Monica) Chung and always kept a spot at the table for Faith Leung (Sherman Peng) and Mirage Leung. Wayne will forever be lovingly remembered as “Gung Gung” or “Yeh Yeh” who dressed up like Santa Claus on Christmas morning and always made time to steal the noses of his beloved grandchildren: Maya, Amelia, Melissa, Elyse, Marcus, Owen, Rosie and Taylor. He is further survived by his extended family members Alan (Penn) Jong, Mary Jong, Joan (Kalvin) Krause, Margaret (Alan) Harrison, Jeannie Jong, Danny (Jenny) Jong, Ken (Elaine) Leung, Jennifer Leung, Yvonne (Wah Cheong) Chan, along with countless nieces, nephews and grandchildren who love him dearly.
Wayne was predeceased by his mother (Chih Ti Chung), grandmother (Louie Non Chip Jong) and grandfather (Hughie Jong). We are comforted that you are reunited with them.
There will be a service at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home on Monday, November 21 at 10am, graveside ceremony and reception at Royal Garden Restaurant to follow. Please bring your memories to share with the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Wayne’s name to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.
