Victor Cumming is denouncing critics who say there are not enough substance use services in Vernon.

The current mayor said in a release, his opponents have insinuated there is a lack of services available locally.

Cumming defends the local resources, saying “[for] a small community, Vernon has an abundance of services for children, youth, adults and seniors suffering with mental health and substance use (MHSU) concerns, and there are more resources to come.”

He points to the psychiatric care offered at the Vernon Health Centre (VHC) and at Vernon Jubilee Hospital; the Vernon Downtown MHSU clinic; and the approximately 12 psychiatrists and over 100 clinicians working on MHSU concerns in Greater Vernon.

The incumbent mayor noted that the health centre offers MHSU assessment, counselling, group programs, an eating disorder program, outreach services, intensive case management, treatment for complex care, a connections team, a crisis response team, an assertive response team, and harm reduction services.

There is also an eight-week substance use intensive day treatment program and a new youth substance use program at VCH.

Cumming added the Downtown MHSU clinic offers a number of services ranging from substance use outreach, overdose prevention, drug checking, opioid agonist treatment, and the new outpatient withdrawal management services.

In his release, Cumming stated that all these initiatives are done in collaboration with Interior Health, local community partners or private organizations.

“No one suffering from mental health or substance use issues needs to be left out,” said Cumming in the release.

“The City of Vernon has numerous, qualified clinicians and professionals to serve our residents in times of substance use and mental health concerns. These services ensure that our city continues to grow in a healthy, robust manner. There are times when someone may not be seen immediately, however, with the services available, all who require them will receive care.”
