The City of Vernon is moving ahead with purchasing replacement recreation services equipment.

At its regular meeting Tuesday (Oct. 11), city council was presented with a proposal to grant early approval for the purchase of a pickup truck, an electric ice resurfacer, and two ride-on floor scrubbers.

The pickup is valued at $54,000, the ice resurfacer is $280,000, and the two floor scrubbers are $34,000. All in, the total cost of the replacement equipment is $368,000.

Administration was seeking early approval to proceed with the procurement of the vehicle and equipment. It was proposed that the purchases be fully funded by the city’s recreation vehicle and equipment reserve, which, as of October 3, had a projected year-end balance of $477,434.

Coun. Brian Quiring inquired whether the pickup would be an electric vehicle, but Doug Ross, director of recreation services, told council the choice of the new vehicle was left up to the manager of parks and recreation and the fleet manager. Based on the price he said it appears that the truck would be gas powered.

Ross added the vehicle being replaced is approximately 15 years old, but accumulates less than 5,000 kilometres each year.

Mayor Victor Cumming said he was excited to learn the ice resurfacer would be electric powered.

Ross added the city is investigating grant options to offset the costs, though those haven’t been approved as yet so they weren’t included in the proposal.

Council voted unanimously in favour of granting early approval for the purchase of the items.
