ICBC urges caution for Thanksgiving travel

Motorists are being urged to be cautious when travelling over the Thanksgiving Day long weekend.

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) stated that, on average, 580 people are injured and three are killed in 1,900 crashes every year over the Thanksgiving weekend in B.C.

Those include 61 injuries in 280 crashes in the Southern Interior over the holiday weekend.

Distracted driving, impaired driving and speed are the top three contributing crashes in the long-weekend crashes.

The Crown Corporation also noted that weather is unpredictable and varies greatly this time of year, and travellers should be prepared for rain, sleet, snow and hail before hitting the road. Winter tires are also required on most highways, including 97 and 5.

ICBC also reminds people to check their vehicles and ensure the fluids are topped up and everything is operating properly, and to pack a well-stocked emergency kit in the vehicle with items like warm clothing, food, water and blankets.

Wildlife are also on the move during the fall, and motorists are asked to be vigilant for any animals on or near roads and to slow down and use caution.
