Murray Settle Haworth

Murray Haworth, at the age of 92, passed suddenly on June 2, 2022 with family by his side.
Murray was born on May 20, 1930, in Kelowna BC to James and Lillian Haworth. Murray grew
up and attended school in Kelowna where he met the love of his life, Florence (Flo) McGregor.
During his high school years, Murray played basketball and coached the girls’ basketball and
track & field teams. Mom, having her eye on Dad, made sure she was a member of both the
basketball team and hurdles on the track and field team. After graduating, Murray attended tech
school for heavy duty mechanic in Calgary.
Murray and Flo were married on March 21, 1951. Days after their wedding they moved out to
6 Mile off Westside Road to a 640-acre ranch. They were pioneers, two city kids moving up to
a house in the middle of nowhere with no running water, electricity, or phone. Murray started
clearing land, horse logging and buying beef cattle and horses, and they had a couple of dairy
cattle for milk. Flo always had a big garden on the go. Gerry was born and 2 years later Bill
was born. Murray and Flo became good friends with many residents from Westside Road and
as he expanded and modernized his logging business, he employed many of them. In 1960
Murray and Flo moved to the 88 acres they had purchased on Old Kamloops Road and Marie
was born shortly after moving. They lived there for 6 years, making many more lifelong friends.
They moved back to 6 Mile in 1966 and the youngest of their children, David, was born a couple
of years later. In 1974 Murray and Flo and their two eldest sons (Gerry & Bill) purchased a herd of
100 Holstein dairy cows and started a dairy as the family’s main source of income. Murray was
active in the dairy sector serving as a director, and then became the president of NOCA dairy and
also sat on the National Dairy Foundation for a period of time.
Murray and Flo retired in 1991 to Armstrong which has been their home since. They were avid
golfers at Spallumcheen golf course always walking all 18 holes. They spent many winters in
Yuma where they made many more friends square dancing, playing golf and having a lot of fun.
In his retirement Murray took great pleasure in working with his youngest son David on his race
car. They didn’t often miss any of David’s races. Murray supported his daughter, Marie, with her
love of horses, many moves after her marriage and in so many ways.
Murray was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather.
He always made time for family and enjoyed our many family dinners and gatherings. Together
they made a home for themselves and their 4 children Gerry, William (Bill), Marie, and David.
Murray was preceded in death by his eldest son Gerry.
Murray leaves behind his loving wife Flo after 71 years of marriage and daughter in law (Cathy)
Haworth, son Bill & (Faye) Haworth, daughter Marie & (Dave) Harding, son Dave & (Judy) Haworth,
18 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren
There are three types of men in this world. Those that wonder what happened, those who
wonder how it happened, and those that make it happen. Murray made it happen and made it
a whole lotta fun.
Murray was our families’ rock, and leaves behind a legacy of hard work and impeccable integrity
and kindness. He will be greatly missed.
There will be a celebration of life held July 26, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Armstrong
Curling Club building, 3315 Pleasant Valley Rd, Armstrong V0E 1B0
