The new Lakeview Wading Pool will include aesthetics that pay tribute to the original “Peanut Pool.”

During the Regular Meeting Monday, May 9, many councillors said they had heard from the public who were upset that the revitalization plan changed the pool so it was no longer in its iconic peanut shape.

Though the shape of the new pool is more squared, Administration did assure Council that the pool would include aspects that represent the pool first opened in 1958.

The ground scape of the new pool will acknowledge the original peanut shape, and that talks are underway in having the original footprint outlined through tile design.

The new pool has been designed to be more accessible for all users with a variety of depths, and the new shape will create a clear distinction between the parent and toddler play area and an area more suited for swim lessons and youth play. There will be a small slide in the toddler area and a basketball hoop on the youth side.

The water will also be deep enough for people to float out of a wheelchair.

Demolition of the pool is expected to go in June, though the existing washroom building will remain intact until after baseball season ends in September.

It was noted that the work was scheduled for over the summer so that weather does not impact the excavation and concrete pouring processes.

With the new pool not expected to be ready until June of 2023, there were concerns that people would not have places to go to beat the heat this summer.

However, Administration informed Council that the summer months are the slower months for the Recreation Centre’s pool use, and it’s expected that the aquatics facility can accommodate the Peanut Pool users this year. It was also noted that people can use the nearby lakes or the outdoor Lavington Outdoor Pool for water activities.

Administration said talks are underway with the fire department to see about establishing pop-up spray parks this summer as well.

The plan for the revitalized Lakeview Wading Pool was designed based on feedback gathered from the public.
