Santa Toy Club provides funds for Vernon Salvation Army programs

Supporters of Beach Radio’s Santa Toy Club have helped make the holidays a little merrier for the less fortunate.

The charity that got its start in 1952 when the radio station was called CJIB AM, has presented the Vernon Salvation Army with a $1,500 donation for the army’s programs including toys for children.

Neil Thompson, auxiliary-lieutenant with the Salvation Army, said it’s a busy time of year for them.

“We try to serve as many people as we can that are in need in the community, and this year it looks like there is going to be over 500 families that are in need of our support,” Thompson told Vernon Matters.

Thompson said those numbers are on par with previous years, but they are seeing more families seeking assistance.

“I think it is related to the pandemic. Some families that have been used to a certain income level have seen decreases over the pandemic and they are learning how to adjust.”

The Army will be giving away over 500 hampers to families-in-need this month in the form of gift cards and toys. Interviews with prospective families are wrapping up this week, with the hampers handed out Dec.13-17.

Thompson adds they are always looking for volunteers for their Kettle campaign outside local stores which is aiming to raise $500,000, same as past years.

“So far were a little bit behind, but I’m confident our community will rally together and support the need,” Thompson remarked.
