Police watchdog investigating collision incident near Armstrong

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been called in to investigate an incident near Armstrong that resulted in two men being taken to hospital.

The incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, when a Vernon North Okanagan Rural RCMP officer heading south on Highway 97A between Armstrong and Enderby was passed by a grey vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

The officer turned on the lights and siren but the grey vehicle, which was driving dangerously, got away.

RCMP say the officer deactivated the emergency equipment but continued to look for the vehicle while continuing south.

Just after 9:45 p.m., a report of a single vehicle collision on Hwy 97A near Armstrong was reported. Mounties located the vehicle, which matched the description of the one that passed the officer earlier.

There were two men inside the vehicle, both were transported to the hospital by B.C. Air Ambulance for what was believed to be serious but non-life threatening injuries.

IIO BC has been tasked with determining if the police’s actions are linked to the injuries of the two men.
