A Vernon business has received national recognition from cannabis professionals and companies.

BlueSky Organics Corporation (BSO), manufacturer of specialized soil and nutrient blends for organic cannabis and agriculture production, won the award for ‘Best Growing Media’ at the Grow-up National Cannabis awards. The event was part of Grow-up Conference and Expo in Niagara Falls, Ontario on Nov. 30, with over 3,000 industry personnel taking part.

BSO won “Best Nutrients’ at the 2019 event, with the 2020 event cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Grow Up Industry Awards Gala is a national annual event honouring cannabis professionals and companies, recognizing excellence and innovation in the industry,” said Mary Horvatincic, co-founder and CEO of BlueSky Organics. “This is especially gratifying because our peers voted for us. We are very proud of our products, and how they help growers with better quality and increased yields.”

The company is promoting sustainable growing practices with products that are compostable and come from nature.

“The widespread use of rock wool (spun rock minerals) starter cubes creates significant waste,” said Horvatincic.

BSO is also working with the University of British Columbia-Okanagan researchers to develop innovative sustainable growing media utilizing waste by-products.

One of the other notable winners was Vancouver-born actor Seth Rogen, who was named ‘Best Celebrity Grower,’ beating out cannabis lovers like Willie Nelson, Tommy Chong and Snoop Dog.
