SilverStar ready to open alpine season

Dec 1, 2021 | 2:00 PM

People are getting their skis and snowboards waxed and ready as SilverStar Mountain Resort is opening its alpine runs Friday.

The lifts will be open and operating at 8:30 a.m., and SilverStar’s communication and sponsorship manager, Chantelle Deacon, told Vernon Matters everything is on track to get going.

“We are so excited to kick-off another season on the slopes up here at SilverStar,” Deacon said.

“Please keep in mind early season conditions are in effect. Please ride with care and obey all mountain signage.”

As of Wednesday morning, the alpine base was 93 centimetres, and the village base was 61 centimetres.

In addition to opening the alpine runs, the resort will kick off the 2021-22 season with the annual Christmas Light-Up Friday.

“Join us for a night of fun to kick off the winter and holiday season. We’ll have fun for the whole family: everything from local crafts and talents, light displays, roaming entertainers, gondola rides, photo opportunities and more,” Deacon said.

The Light-Up will go from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Deacon was asked about the impact of the weather-related road closures on bookings and ticket sales.

“The Christmas holiday season is our busiest time of year for accommodations. We haven’t seen too many cancellations yet, however if the highways do remain closed we anticipate more cancellations going into the Christmas holidays,” Deacon said.

In compliance with health and safety protocols, skiers, snowboarders and other visitors will be required to wear face coverings in all indoor areas and in shared outdoor spaces, including in lines and on chair lifts. Proof of vaccination is not needed to hit the slopes, but it is required for accessing restaurants and bars.

The resort also states on it’s website that parking reservations won’t be needed this winter season, while also noting that there will be no cap on ticket sales.

The Nordic tracks opened earlier this winter, and SilverStar is tentatively set to open it’s Night Skiing Loop on Dec. 17. It’s not yet known when the backside will open.
