Enderby cracks down on shipping containers

It’s getting out of hand.

The City of Enderby has served notice it will be stepping up enforcement of shipping container regulations in response to a growing number of the storage facilities.

“Shipping containers are only allowed in residential neighbourhoods on a temporary basis. Shipping containers are allowed in service commercial, industrial and institutional neighbourhoods on a permanent basis provided they are meeting zoning regulations and health and safety requirements,” said a news release from Kurt Inglis, planner and deputy corporate officer with the city.

Inglis said a six-month grace period, ending on January 31, 2022, will be provided to allow the owners of unpermitted shipping containers to bring their property into compliance with land use regulations and health and safety requirements.

The city has also developed more prescriptive health and safety requirements for the use and siting of shipping containers when permitted in particular zones.

“Adherence to these health and safety requirements will be ensured through random inspections,” advised Inglis.

An overview of the city’s regulations and policies related to the use and siting of shipping containers can be found on the city’s website.
