All those who complete a short safety briefing, which includes a Vernon-specific “Safe Rider Quiz,” will be awarded a $5 Neuron e-scooter credit and a free Neuron helmet, while supplies last. They will also receive one-on-one assistance and advice on how to best use Neuron’s e-scooters safely.

“The people of Vernon have really embraced e-scooters and the feedback has been extremely positive,” said Ankush Karwal, Regional Manager at Neuron Mobility. “We are continually working with the city and community groups on ways to enhance rider safety for both our riders and also pedestrians and we’ll be holding regular #ScootSafe events.”

Angela Broadbent, Active Transportation Coordinator, City of Vernon, said safety is critical to the success of the City of Vernon’s electric kick scooter pilot program.

“We are pleased to see Neuron taking a hands-on, proactive approach to educating their riders. I encourage anyone who is curious or a little uncertain about the e-scooters to take part to learn more about how they work and how to ride safely,” Broadbent remarked.

Mayla Janzen of Polson Artisan Night Market said since the e-scooters were introduced to Vernon, they’ve been happy to see local people using them as an alternative to cars to get to the market.

“Local initiatives like the Polson Night Market, closing 30th Ave. for the summer, and the introduction of the Neuron e-scooters mean that pedestrian activities in Vernon have never been more approachable or safer,” said Janzen.

Important riding rules and safety tips

• In Vernon, Neuron riders must be 18 years old and above
• Wearing a helmet is mandatory; there is one on every e-scooter
• Riding is allowed on bike lanes, multi-use pathways, empty sidewalks and roads with a speed of 50km/h or lower
• One rider per e-scooter, and no tandem riding with children
• Keep a safe distance from pedestrians and mobility devices such as wheelchairs
• Do not ride under the influence of alcohol or other substances
• Be aware and remove earphones
• Park responsibly and don’t cause an obstruction

In Vernon single trips cost C$1.15 to unlock the e-scooter and 35c per minute thereafter. More frequent users have the option to purchase Neuron Passes, a subscription service, available in three-day (C$25), weekly (C$33), or monthly (C$89) options.

Eligible Public Health workers and Emergency Services staff can receive free monthly passes which can be redeemed in the app using an applicable work email address. There will also be a group rides feature which will allow up to five e-scooters to be unlocked with one smartphone which will benefit friends and family who wish to travel together.
