Vernon pushes province for more wildfire control funding

Vernon is among the communities supporting a lobby effort to get the B.C. government to invest more into wildfire fuel management.
“This is another year of wildfires, and across the province, there is a need to start investing, very significantly, in upgrading forest management for fire control,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters. “That was very evident in what we call the Abbott report into fires and floods in 2017.”
Cumming says local fire-smarting programs to reduce the fire threat have taken place at Ellison Park, in Adventure Bay and the Foothills, but he says it needs to be done at a much larger scale due to climate change.
“It would put us in a position where the fires are there, but not as catastrophic as what we’re seeing,” Cumming commented.
