Jessie Laurine Greig (nee McNeil)
December 20, 1924 – June 26, 2021
Laurine Greig was known by many names within the various circles of family, friends and colleagues who knew her: Mom, Giga, Great Giga, Aunt Laurine, Laurine, Laurie and of course Mrs. Greig.
On June 26th Laurine passed away peacefully in her sleep with her sons at her side after a full and well lived life of 96 years.
Born and raised in Victoria / Sydney, BC, Laurine was a lifelong BC resident whether in Burnaby on Parkwood Crescent as a young mother of three, in Vernon at KAOS on Estamont Beach/Westside Road as an empty-nester and then a retiree, and in Vancouver at the Twin Rainbows Housing Co-op for the last 20 years of her life.
Following a dedicated service in the Royal Canadian Air Force where she was stationed in Tofino as a wireless operator during WWII, Laurine attended UBC and graduated with her degree in Social Work.
Laurine’s career in social work was always to help and assist those who needed most; from the young teenage girls with the Elizabeth Fry Society, to the parolees with the National Parole Service, to the former inmates through the John Howard Society.
On June 1, 1951 wedding bells rang for her when she wed James Robert Greig. While their life together ended tragically on July 5, 1966 with the death of “Bob” their love and legacy live on through Rob (Marilyn), Stu (Renee) and Marsha (Jeremy) plus three Grand Children James (Lacey), Stephanie (Jack) and Kyla as well as two Great Grandsons Nolan and Gabe.
Many thanks to all the staff and medical professionals at Parkwood Regency, Vernon Jubilee Hospital and Hospice House who made Laurine’s final months, days and moments a comfortable space.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
