Wildfire activity picks up in Kamloops Fire Centre

Jun 29, 2021 | 11:20 AM

The B.C. Wildfire Service is dealing with nine active fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre today, which is why we are now seeing some smoke in the sky around the Okanagan.

The 1.8 hectare fire south of Peachland that broke out Monday is now under control.

The Sparks Lake Fire, northwest of Kamloops, has grown to 350 hectares (update) and has led to nine properties being paced on evacuation alert by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District.

The wildfire was first spotted late Monday afternoon (June 28).

The B.C. Wildfire Service says it is burning in mature Jack pine and Lodgepole pine. Air tankers were tasked with hitting the fire hard last night.

A cause is under investigation.

The TNRD has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in response to the fire, and will have social services available should it be necessary.
