Landslide Watch Continues At Kaslo Landslide Site

Geo-technical engineers are still keeping a close eye on a landslide site in Kaslo.

Residents of 47 homes were ordered out Monday when the slope above slipped.

No homes were hit by debris but it came within 300 metres of one house.

Bronwen Bird with the Central Kootenay Regional District says most people have been able to go home

” So now instead of the fourty-seven homes, it’s just the six homes that are directly beneath the slide, so many of the other residents that were evacuated were able to return home.”

They will remain on evacuation alert as there is still some instability.

Bird says the slope is still muddy.

She says engineers have seen a little bit of movement and some continuing instability so they are going to be continuing with inspections and assessments throughout the week.

The slide was substantial.

” Anywhere between 10 thousand and 20 thousand cubic metres. It’s approximately 100 metres long and 75 metres wide.

The slide stopped within 300 metres of one house.

Another meeting to update the residents is planned for Monday.
