Terry Pakenham

Terry Douglas Pakenham, 68, passed away in the comfort of his own home on April 24, 2020 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 14 week battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Jean and their two sons, Colin and Clay (Emma) of Vernon, BC, brother in law George (Erna) Majkut and loving extended family, Jeremi (Ana), Joe and Kate. Terry is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family
Terry was born in Kimberley, BC on July 15, 1951, son of the late Clayton James & Ethel Pakenham, also predeceased by his brother James Pakenham.
Terry served in the RCMP for 25 years with postings in Cranbrook, Terrace, and Vernon BC. While he moved through various positions within the force, his true passions were in crime prevention and forensic identification. As a Forensics Officer he covered some of the most high profile cases witnessed in Vernon, BC. He retired from the force and went to work for the City of Vernon as the Manager of the Safe Communities Unit for another 12 1/2 years. Terry was chairman of the Jean Minguy Memorial RCMP Youth Academy for several years and served on many boards, including the John Howard Society, Restorative Justice Society, Partners in Action and the Schubert Centre, as well as another 20 other notable North Okanagan boards and committees. Terry was a true visionary and enjoyed contributing to the betterment of his community. He continually and unselfishly gave of himself because he believed in people.
Our family would like to thank these thoughtful people for the wonderful care given during Terry’s battle with cancer – our family doctor Dr. Jeffrey Kwantes, Dr. Harold Yacyshyn, Dr. Scott Ainslie, Dr. Hamish Hwang, Dr. Ghee Hwang, Dr. Chris Cunningham, and Dr. Ed Hardy. We would also like to make special mention to the outstanding and loving Palliative Care Team 2, Jacqui, Elizabeth, Treena, Jessica, Michelle, Sarah, Haley, BSW – Beth, OT’s – Tennille, Laura, Community Care – Heather, and Diane, and the Safeway pharmacy staff.
To every friend, family and community member who reached out through thoughtful emails, texts and phone calls – Sharing beautiful memories and shared experiences with Terry – a deep and profound thank you. Your virtual support has provided our family strength during this difficult time.
We will have a memorial remembering Terry that will be announced in the future once safe to do so following current social pandemic concerns and restrictions.
