66 new COVID cases in B.C. for total of 725; 62 cases in Interior Health

British Columbia has seen 66 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 725.

In the Interior Health region, there were an additional 16 for a total of 62.

The number of fatalities remains at 14.

There are 66 people in hospital, with 26 in Intensive Care, and 186 have fully recovered.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said they have now come up with a plan for health care workers to remain at one facility for the duration of the pandemic so they aren’t going back and forth between care homes and facilities.

There are also new guidelines for when it comes to prescribing medications for the homeless.

She talked about the announcement from the Public Safety Minister today that, to some extent, detailed what essential services are in the province and gives municipalities the power to enforce orders. She added that essential service workers and those who deal with them have to be safe and respect the social distance guidelines.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the 8-1-1 COVID line received just over 5,000 calls yesterday and the average wait time was just five minutes and he thanked the professionals for dealing with everyone who called.

Dix said after they put out a request for recently retired health care workers to come back to work during the pandemic, they have heard from 248 nurses and 26 doctors.

As for personal protective equipment, the minister said they are micromanaging existing inventory and are receiving new supplies from national and private sources.
