UPDATE: Crews respond to rooftop fire at downtown business

Mar 26, 2020 | 10:45 AM

Vernon Fire Rescue responded to a report of ‘visible smoke’ at a downtown business Thursday morning.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire fairly quickly in the area of Distinctive Decor Antiques at 3124 30th Avenue.

Christy Poirier, communications manager with the City of Vernon, said it was reported as potentially coming from an antiques store with reports of black smoke coming from the roof.

“When firefighters arrived on scene they found out the fire was actually started on the exterior of the building, and it was the building beside the antiques store,” Poirier told Vernon Matters.

Crews remained on scene to monitor the site and mop-up.

Fire Rescue determined the fire started on a rooftop deck, which was not visible from the road and not easily accessible.

“Today was an example of the dedicated work and expertise of our local firefighters,” said Deputy Chief Scott Hemstad. “Because of their actions, damage to the building was minimized and the fire was kept from extending to other buildings in the Downtown core.”

No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
