Federal government gets strict with returning travellers: PM warns of fines or prison time

Mar 26, 2020 | 8:54 AM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used his national address on Thursday to reinforce the new quarantine rules for Canadians returning from travel abroad.

Trudeau said too many travellers have not been self-isolating when they come home, which is why it’s now mandatory for 14 days.

“Some people have not been taking this seriously. They’re stopping by the grocery store on the way home from the airport. They’re getting together with friends.. This kind of conduct is not just disappointing, it’s dangerous,” said Trudeau.

Anyone who does not, could face serious fines or even prison time under the Quarantine Act.

Trudeau also advised the nation about a scam tied to the Emergency Response Benefit announced yesterday as part of a 107-billion dollar relief package, where some people have been getting a bogus text that appears to be from the federal government.

“I want to remind everyone the government’s website (canada.ca) is the best place to find reliable information on everything we’re doing,” said the PM.

Trudeau says an application portal will launch as quickly as possible and people should start receiving money within 14 days of applying.

People impacted by Covid-19 will be able to get up to $2,000 a month for four months.
