Free transit offered in communities during COVID-19 crisis

Mar 20, 2020 | 4:50 PM

Passengers in all BC Transit communities, including Greater Vernon, will not have to pay fares for the next 30 days.

The measure is being provided by BC Transit, the province and local governments due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The fare removal is for all systems including conventional, community, and handyDART.

“We are working to implement these changes in communities as quickly as possible, and we would ask customers to be patient with us during this time,” a news release from BC Transit said.

Transit has also started rear door boarding for its vehicles where available, to enhance social distancing for drivers and passengers.

Passengers can still load through the front door if they require use of the ramp or other accessible features.

According to the release, staff members from BC Transit are working hard to maintain services, and with the regularly changing situation they expect to have daily trip cancellations for the foreseeable future in various systems.

“We will update customers on a day-by-day basis while we work on implementing a new sustainable plan for services across the province,” the release said. “We encourage people to stay up to date for daily trip cancellations at BCTransit.com, or through our customer call centres.”
