Trudeau announces new plan to ensure medical supplies & hand sanitizer

Mar 20, 2020 | 8:40 AM

The federal government has announced a plan to make sure Canada’s health care system has the supplies it needs to deal with the Covid-19 crisis.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday the government will work with companies to allow them to shift their production to manufacture products like face masks, ventilators and hand sanitizer.

Trudeau also confirmed the Canada -U.S. border will close at midnight tonight to non-essential travel.

The PM added federal staff are working “around the clock” to process applications for financial assistance submitted by Canadians due to the Covid pandemic, with more than 500,000 applications to Service Canada this week.

When asked if he thinks Canadian athletes should go to the Toyko Olympics, Trudeau said it depends on how the situation changes, and that Canadian athletes and teams will be making those decisions as the Games get closer.

Canada has 923 cases of coronavirus as of Friday morning, including 271 in B.C., and there have been 12 deaths.
