National ski championships at Sovereign Lake cancelled due to virus

Concerns about the coronavirus have led to a high-profile North Okanagan event being shut down.

The 2020 Canadian Ski Championships scheduled for March 25 to April 2 at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre have been cancelled due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak.

The decision was made by Nordiq Canada, the governing body for cross-country skiing in Canada.

“Public health protection is our first priority. The number of incidents of community transmission is growing in B.C. as is the total number of people infected. Although no cases have yet been confirmed in Vernon, there is significant back-and-forth travel between the Okanagan and the Vancouver and Seattle areas, both with relatively large numbers of confirmed cases,” the event organizing committee explained.

Many of the attendees would be travelling by air, which may increase their likelihood of contact with the virus.

“Most of our volunteers are over 60, and many are over 70, which are considered at-risk populations according to the Government of Canada. In turn, these volunteers would return to their families each evening and could unknowingly increase the likelihood of the transmission of COVID-19 within the community,” the release said.

The organizing committee is not only concerned about the health of its volunteers but the community as a whole.

“The median age of residents in Greater Vernon is 46.5 (Census 2011), making the ageing population at a potentially greater risk of contracting the virus,” the committee stated.

The event is the largest and highest-caliber annual cross-country skiing event in Canada. It was expected to attract about 650 athletes plus support staff to the area, generating an estimated $2.3 million impact for Greater Vernon.
