Arena project draws several bids

An idea that was first talked about nearly four years ago, is almost ready for the construction to begin.

Lumby won Kraft Hockeyville in 2016 which generated a $100,000 grant from the food company which organizers targeted for improvements to the village’s Pat Duke Memorial Arena.

Today, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) announced it has received five bids to upgrade the 53-year-old arena — and all were with in the project’s $3-million budget.

“I’m pleased to see that the project received interest from the construction community,” said Rick Fairbairn, RDNO Area D Director and Chair of the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee.

The next step is to select the successful proponent, and then the work can begin.

The project will add new life to the building that opened in 1967.

“The work includes reinforcement of the existing arena arched structure, as well as a full suite of four newly constructed change rooms, a north warming and viewing area, entryway and modest improvements to existing change rooms,” said a news release from RDNO.

The arena provides ice time for a variety of users, including minor hockey, figure skating, ringette and leisure ice uses.

In addition to the Hockeyville money, the project is also funded by a $2.5 million federal government grant, a grant from Telus and community fundraising totaling $75,000, and $230,000 from RDNO through the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture service.
