Spring chipping begins this month in Vernon

Mar 4, 2020 | 2:00 PM

Spring is close by and that also means Vernon’s spring chipping program is getting ready to roll out.

The curbside pickup of residential pruning will run between March 23 and April 17.

“The curbside pickup of residential pruning is funded by residential yard recycling customers and is provided on the same day and location as regular garbage pickup,” a city news release stated.

The 2020 schedule is:
City of Vernon and Foothills March 23 – 27 | March 30 – April 3
Okanagan Landing and Blue Jay subdivision April 7 – 10 | April 14 – 17

The guidelines include stacking prunings with butt ends facing the street or lane, and no branches or tree trunks over 10 centimetres (four inches) in diameter.

As the service provides a maximum of 10 minutes of chipping per customer each week, residents are also reminded of the following:

  • Do not pile pruning with neighbour’s chipping pile
  • Do not tie with wire
  • No roots or dirt in pile
  • Pile thorns separately

This year, chipping will be provided on Good Friday for Blue Jay customers.

Missed piles of pruning need to be reported to the city within 24 hours of the chipper going through a neighbourhood, or they won’t be picked up.

Customers using bin service must make their own arrangements to dispose of pruning.

Yard and garden waste may also be dropped off at the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility free of charge.
