Council gets Kin Race Track site update

Feb 24, 2020 | 5:10 AM

Vernon council will get an update on plans for the Kin Race Track land at their meeting today.

The 32-acre site on 43rd Avenue has been identified as a possible location for a new active living centre, possibly with a 50-metre pool and other facilities.

No final decisions will be made on the centre and the site until a recreation feasibility study is completed late this spring.

A consultant has produced three options for local politicians to consider, ranging in costs from $59-$78 million.

The options go from retrofitting the current Recreation Complex site to add a 50 metre pool there, to building a new pool, double gymnasium and fitness track at the Kin Race Track site.

The feasibility study to outline facilities, cost estimates, and the location for the centre is expected to be completed this spring.

If all goes according to plan, Vernon council could give the go-ahead to a new active living centre by the summer of 2021, a general timeline outlined by city staff.

A flood mapping and risk study is currently underway at the Kin Lands to identify hazards on the publicly-owned property which is low lying and susceptible to flooding.

Daniel Sturgeon, long range planner with the city, said given the potentially unstable subsurface materials there (likely silt and clay), a geotechnical site investigation would be required for any large structure or infrastructure.

Highway and infrastructure improvements in the immediate vicinity would also likely be required by the Ministry of Transportation, given that the Kin Lands are within 800 metres of a provincial highway (97).
