“When we create spaces where people can safely share the mental health circumstances of themselves and their loved ones, we build stronger support systems and connection to community. Those who take part in Ride Don’t Hide as participants, sponsors, donors and volunteers can also benefit from a sense of achievement and giving back to the community,” said Payson.

Last year’s event raised nearly $60,000 for youth programs and the Crisis Line, with Vernon having the top fundraising team in Canada for the third year in a row.

“This is about friends helping friends, families helping families, neighbours helping neighbours,” said Payson. “Everyone shares in its success.”

In 2015, CMHA Vernon started an early intervention and prevention program to provide education, support, life skills and resilience training for children and early adolescents. Now, due to generous support from the community through Ride Don’t Hide and community donors, CMHA offers six programs for local youth aged 7 to 18.

“Those experiencing mental health struggles need to know that they are not alone, and that we are here for them and their families. Whether it’s through a program we offer, a volunteer or work placement opportunity or our 24/7 crisis line, there are many ways to connect to supports in our community,” said Payson. “When people reach out, we want them to know there are helping hands throughout our community ready to offer assistance.”

CMHA Vernon & District encourages cyclists and non-cyclists alike to take part in this year’s Ride Don’t Hide. The event is open to all ages and skill levels, from a 2.2 km fun course to a more challenging 40 km ride. There is also a stride route for those who prefer to walk, and new this year is an e-bike route. Community members can participate by becoming a team captain, joining a team, becoming a sponsor or by volunteering for the event.

Registration is $30 for youth and adults who register by June 1^st ($35 after that date), and free for children 12 and under. Participants also have the option of having the registration fee waived if they raise $100 in donations.
