Powerhouse presents ‘Girl in Goldfish Bowl’

Powerhouse Theatre has announced the next show in their season, Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, a 2003 Governor General’s Award-winning play by Canadian playwright Morris Panych.

The unique and intriguing story is set in Steveston, British Columbia, near Vancouver in 1962.

The Cuban Missile Crisis is at the height of its conflict, and the world is on the edge of its seat as a young girl named Iris is preoccupied with the events leading up to what she describes as “the last few days of her childhood.”

After the death of her goldfish, Amahl, she finds a mysterious man washed up on the beach and thinks he is the reincarnation of Amahl. She brings the stranger back to her home, thinking he can bring her family together again but could never predict the events that unfold next.

The performances begin at 7:30 p.m. February 19 – 22 with a matinée at 2 p.m. on February 23. The second week of performance begins 7:30 p.m. from February 26 – 29.

“Renowned director Cara Nunn has assembled an exceptional cast to portray the varying degrees of befuddlement and angst as they play out this dark tale, combined with cuteness, wackiness, and unpredictability,” says a news release from Powerhouse Theatre.

The cast includes Peter Byrnes as Lawrence, Nevada Christensen as Iris, Beverley Peacock as Rose, Jacs Spence as Owen, and Kristine Larsen as Sylvia.
